(http://www.youthinformation.com/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=89865) It has been noted that one of the reasons for discrimination in schools is because of the dividing by race. Experts recommend that the name should be changed from race to ethnic background in a school community since it gives people a greater chance to be thought of as an equal in the class and school community.
Discrimination in school does not only occur because of what race or the ethnic background of a student it also occurs if a student has any medical issues, learning disabilities or any other so called ‘ special needs’. Researchers on the subject now believe that because of these classifications students are being more discriminated against then ever. Students who have poor English skills and are therefore put in a class like ESOL or other speech classes are the ones who are affected the most. After that come the students with a medical illness such as diabetes.
The reason for discrimination against people with a medical illness has increased so much over the past years is because of the fact that it is growing more common and other students are unsure if what the problem is. Several public school in the US have therefore now come up with the method of educating the students of certain illnesses at a young age so that fellow classmates who are diagnosed with a sickness can be understood instead of teased.
Students with speech difficulties have another problem. Most likely they come from a country that has a very different language than the one regularly used in their new school. These are usually the students that are given nicknames like; lisper and other hurt full names. Reasons for the fact that these problems are still alive today in the world are because teachers do not witness these problems like they may see a person being thought of differently because of their illness. ESOL (English as a Second Language) is a good way to help students be accepted because of their speech.
No matter what every student believe everybody is discriminated against at least once in his or her life time. Either because they can’t pronounce a word right or because they have to go to the nurse during lunch to take some form of medication. Everybody is the same no matter what our appearance or differences.
